Ink Media, a Canadian company, have developed Ink mC, a low cost mobile computer to address the issue of digital inclusion globally. It has been designed to reduce the three pillars of the total cost of ownership to a minimum, namely initial cost, software licensing and maintenance. It is an A5 sized device, based upon all open source software including Open Office. It does what most people want from a productivity device yet has many innovative features. It draws power like a mobile phone so cuts running costs; is made from rice husk filled recyclable plastic and cannot suffer from hard drive failures/slowdowns, virus infection or overheating. It is being sold in the UK from the autumn via a small number of partners, accredited to supply the education sector. It is expected to be priced at sub $300US.
